Description
Nos. 25 and 25A in Market Square is a shop and dwelling that dates from the late 18th century, with possible earlier elements, and has been altered in the 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and colourwashed brick, topped with a roof made of concrete plain tiles and artificial stone slates, featuring brick stacks. It consists of a main range and a long rear wing, standing two storeys high, with parts raised to three storeys.
The front of the building has two windows, with 12-pane sash windows on the first floor that are adorned with gauged brick flat arches. The ground floor features a large 20th-century bay window, flanked by original doorways that have two-panel doors and ornamental overlights. The 19th-century roof has projecting boxed eaves and a left verge. The left gable wall is built of rubble with brick quoins and extends to a rubble rear wing. The first part of the rear wing includes a canted bay window, two sash windows on the first floor, and additional sashes on the second floor, which is made of 19th-century brick. The second part of the rear wing has casement windows on both floors, with stop-chamfered lintels; the lower opening was formerly a wide doorway. The interior has not been inspected.
