Description

No. 3 Causeway is a shop and dwelling that dates from the late 17th century and was remodelled and extended in the early 19th century. The building is constructed from partly-rendered limestone rubble and brick, topped with a plain-tile roof featuring a brick gable stack. It has a two-unit plan with an added rear wing and stands two storeys plus an attic.

The front of the building has two windows and is rendered, featuring a plinth and a storey band. It retains one horizontal-sliding sash window on the first floor, while the ground floor has a 19th-century shop front with an inset doorway beneath a contemporary fascia, and to the right, there is a 16-pane sash window. The roof includes a semi-inset roof dormer and a stack on the right side. The rear of the building has two small gabled projections and the brick rear wing.

Inside, there is a wide late-17th-century open-well stair that rises to the attic, featuring turned balusters, a moulded handrail, ball finials, and turned pendants, although the lowest flight has been altered. The first floor showcases early-18th-century fielded panelling, matching doors, architraves, and integral cupboards, along with a moulded cornice and a fireplace that has a moulded mantel shelf and a panelled overmantel with flanking pilasters.
