Description
No. 97 High Street is a shop and dwelling, now a house, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble and features an old plain-tile roof with brick stacks. It has a double-depth through-passage plan and stands two storeys tall with attics. The 18th-century front includes a central six-panel door set under a stone flat arch, flanked by two large 19th-century shop windows with panelled architraves; the window to the right is a tripartite sash. On the first floor, there are two 16-pane sash windows with keyblocks, likely from the early 19th century. Straight joints indicate an earlier arrangement. The roof is hipped, with a stack on the left and a large stack on the right at the rear, featuring two diagonal shafts. Gabled rear ranges extend to the right, forming a long row of outbuildings or possibly former cottages. Inside, there is an open fireplace, an 18th-century stair with turned balusters and panelled sides, a winder stair leading to the attics, and a clasped purlin roof in the rear wing.
