Description

29 and 29A Market Square is a shop and dwelling dating from the early 18th century, with possible earlier elements, and some early 19th-century features. The building is constructed from part-rendered brick, limestone rubble, and chequer brick with yellow headers, topped with plain-tile and Welsh-slate roofs and brick stacks. It consists of four ranges surrounding a courtyard and is two storeys plus attics in height.

No. 29, located on the left, features a rendered two-window front with a moulded eaves cove and two 12-pane sash windows on the first floor. The steep-pitched roof has two hipped roof dormers. To the right, No. 29A is taller and has a large elaborately-moulded stone-mullioned window on the first floor, likely from the 19th century. The moulded dentil cornice of No. 29A continues from that of No. 28, which is adjacent. A 20th-century shop front extends across both sections of the building.

At the rear of No. 29A, there is a two-storey, three-window range with a rubble ground floor and early 19th-century chequer brickwork above, featuring very large sash windows. The rubble and brick outbuilding ranges at the rear of No. 29, mostly dating from the 18th century, form the other two sides of the courtyard. Inside No. 29, there are closely spaced heavy chamfered beams at the ground floor, which may date from the 16th or early 17th century. No. 29A originally formed part of Ambrosden House, which is next door at No. 28.
