Description

Ambrosden House and Lairg House is a substantial town house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone alterations. The building features colourwashed brick and coursed squared limestone, with old plain-tile roofs and brick stacks. It consists of a main range and rear service wings, standing two storeys plus an attic.

The front of the building has six windows and is made of brick, with a moulded dentil course. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, and there is a 20th-century shop front. The roof includes three flat-headed roof dormers and is hipped to the right. The cornice returns over the angled rubble end wall, which has a first-floor sash window and a blocked window below.

At the rear, there is a lower three-window rubble wing that likely underwent remodelling in the 19th century but still retains a datestone inscribed "H/RG/1688." This wing features 4-pane sash windows, with segmental arches at the ground floor, and an inserted doorway. Additional two-storey ranges parallel to the main range and the wing are constructed in 18th-century chequer brick and have sash windows along with a storey band. The interior has not been inspected. Ambrosden House once included No. 29A to the left.
