Description
No. 1 Causeway is a shop and dwelling that dates from the late 17th century and was remodeled in the 18th to early 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered rubble and features plain-tile and Welsh-slate roofs, with a rendered gable stack. It has an L-plan layout and stands two storeys tall, plus an attic. The front facade includes two 4-pane sash windows above a 20th-century shop front, and to the extreme right, there is a narrow window with margin lights above a 4-panel door with an overlight. A plain parapet rises above a moulded cornice. The roof features a small 2-light dormer and a gable parapet with a stack on the left side. The left end wall has pairs of narrow windows on both the first and second floors, and it connects to a lower rear wing that is slated. This rear wing has a wide 6-light window on the first floor, flanked by panelled pilasters, above a square shop window with a moulded architrave. Inside, there are 2-panel doors and a quarter-turn stair dating from around 1700, leading to the attics, with turned balusters and ball finials.
