Description
25 and 25A Fossgate is a house with a shop, built in the late 19th century. The building features white brick in Flemish bond with timber guttering, while the left side is red brick in English garden-wall bond and the right side is rendered. It has a slate roof with a brick stack at the right end.
The exterior has three storeys and a one-window front. The shopfront includes pilasters with fluted necking, a frieze, and a projecting flat dentilled cornice supported by grooved brackets. There is a glazed and panelled door with an overlight, set back between plate glass windows with transoms. The first floor features a canted bay window with one-pane sashes beneath a dentilled cornice and a half-hexagonal roof, with sills that extend to form a raised band. On the second floor, the windows are round-headed one-pane sashes with projecting sills on brackets that extend to form a sill band. The eaves have a moulded dentilled gutter box on shaped brackets. Access to No.25A is through a panelled door located in Straker's Passage, framed by a pilastered doorcase with a flat cornice hood on scrolled consoles.
The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value as an integral part of Fossgate.
