Description
Epworth Sports is a house that has been converted into a house and shop, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with a late 19th to early 20th century shop front added to No 46. The building is constructed of orange-yellow brick in Flemish bond, with rendered gables and a concrete tile roof. It has a double-depth plan featuring a central entrance hall and two rooms, with the right side opened up for the shop.
The structure stands two storeys high and consists of three bays. At the base, there is a rendered plinth. The shop front includes a central entrance leading to No 48, featuring stone steps that lead to a recessed 20th-century glazed door set in an architrave beneath a plain overlight. To the right, there is a half-glazed fielded-panelled shop door with a plain overlight in the reveal, along with a two-light transomed shop window. Both doors and the window are framed by a pilastered surround with a panelled frieze, consoles, and a hood.
On the left side, there is a 16-pane sash window in a flush wooden architrave with a sill beneath a stucco flat arch. A three-course brick band runs along the first floor with a projecting upper course. The first floor features 12-pane sashes in the side bays, also in flush wooden architraves with sills and stucco flat arches, while the central bay has a blind plastered dummy window with a similar sill and arch. The eaves cornice is stepped and dentilled, and the gables are stone-coped with shaped kneelers. Corniced stacks are located at the ends of the building.
Inside, there is a late 18th to early 19th century open-well staircase with a ramped corniced handrail and column balusters, as well as six fielded-panel doors in architraves.
