Description

68 and 70 High Street is a house that now serves as a house and shop, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with a shop front added in the late 19th to early 20th century. The building is constructed of orange and yellow brick, featuring a front in contrasting Flemish bond, with the lower courses rendered. It has a pantile roof and is L-shaped in plan, consisting of two rooms with a central entrance hall and a wing to the rear right.

The structure is two storeys high with an attic and has three bays, presenting a symmetrical façade with an inserted shop front on the right. The central entrance to No 70 includes a step leading to a part-glazed 20th-century door set in the original surround, which features a moulded lintel and an overlight with margin lights below a painted rubbed-brick flat arch. The shop front for No 68 to the right has a recessed half-glazed door with a single-pane shop window adjacent; both are framed by a pilastered surround with a plain frieze, cornice, and hood. To the left, there is a 19th-century plate-glass sash window in the original 18th-century flush wooden architrave, complete with a sill beneath a painted rubbed-brick flat arch. The first floor features similar windows and surrounds, with a narrow sash window on the right that has been truncated. The left gable end has a 4-pane flush sash window on the ground floor and a small attic hatch with a board door. The interior has not been investigated. This building is included for its group value.
