Description

No. 11 Market Place is a house that now functions as a house and shop. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with a later 19th-century addition at the rear and some 20th-century alterations. The front is made of red brick in Flemish bond, while the sides and rear are brown brick, with red brick used for the rear wing. The building has an L-shaped plan, featuring a double-depth, two-room central entrance-hall front, with the front right section now opened to the rear. It stands two storeys high and has four first-floor windows.

The entrance features a recessed six-panelled door beneath a dentilled cornice and a three-pane overlight, all set in an architrave under a channelled and keyed cambered wedge lintel. There are modern shop windows added to each side, dating from around 1970. On the first floor, there are 16-pane sash windows in flush wooden architraves, complete with sills and channelled and keyed cambered wedge lintels. The building has a dentilled brick eaves cornice and features an axial stack and an end stack to the right.

At the rear, there is a blocked ground-floor opening and a round-headed stair window with glazing bars, flanked by 12-pane sash windows. The rear wing includes a six-fielded-panel door, 12-pane sashes, and a tripartite sash with glazing bars. Inside the front range, there is a moulded cornice and a pair of arched alcoves on the ground floor to the right, although this area has not been fully investigated.
