Description
No. 22 Market Place is a house dating from the mid-18th century. It is built of yellow brick with red brick dressings and has a pantile roof. The house features a double-depth, two-room central entrance-hall plan and stands two storeys high with three symmetrical bays. The exterior includes a moulded plinth and quoins. There are two stone steps leading to a 20th-century door with an overlight, which is set beneath a brick flat arch. This door is flanked by 19th-century four-pane sash windows in original flush wooden frames, surrounded by red brick with sills and painted flat arches.
On the first floor, there are twin single-course brick bands, a pair of similar windows, and a central dummy window with painted glazing bars, all beneath painted brick soldier arches. The eaves cornice is stepped and ovolo-moulded with three courses of brick. The gables are raised and have brick coping. The end stacks have been rebuilt in the 20th century, with one stack partially rebuilt on the right side.
Inside, there is a re-set open well staircase featuring a ramped corniced handrail and column-on-vase balusters with square knops, along with fielded-panel doors.
