Description
The building is a former lock-up, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some later alterations to the roof of the left cell. It was built by the Vestry Board for use by the Manor Constables. The structure is made of brown brick with sandstone ashlar dressings and has a pantile roof. It features a plan with two rooms, each having an entrance to the street. The building is single storey with two windows. The doorways have ashlar jambs and lintels, and original heavy studded oak board doors. These are flanked by small single windows with ashlar surrounds and six vertical iron bars with a single cross-bar. The cell on the right has a swept roof, while the left cell has a later single-pitch roof that had collapsed at the time of resurvey. Inside, the right cell retains its original sandstone ceiling. There is a former boilerhouse adjoining the rear and a fire-station addition to the right, but these are not of special interest. This building is an unusual and important survival, although it was empty and partly derelict at the time of resurvey.
