Description
A pair of houses on High Street, Snaith, built in the mid-18th century and altered later. The houses are constructed of orange-brown brick with red brick detailing, and have a Welsh slate roof. The building follows a double-depth plan, comprising three rooms with a through-passage to the left of centre, and a pair of later wings at the rear.
The houses are two storeys high with three windows on the first floor. They feature quoins. Number 9, on the right, has two stone steps leading to a 19th-century panelled door and overlight within a segmental-headed red brick surround. To the right of the door is a shop window within a pilastered surround, with a simple frieze, cornice, and hood. A 12-pane flush sash window is to the left, set in its original red brick surround with a rubbed-brick flat arch. There is a panelled door to the passage, framed by painted ashlar lintels and jambs. Number 7, to the left, has a blocked shop front with a door and window beneath a timber lintel. The first floor of Number 9 has two 12-pane flush sash windows, and Number 7 has a single 2-pane flush sash window, all set in original red brick surrounds with 19th-century brick flat arches and raised eaves. The building has an axial stack and an end stack to the left, both with cogged brick cornices, and a rebuilt stack to the right. Inside Number 9, there is a 19th-century staircase with plain balusters; the interior has not been fully examined. The rear wings and adjoining ranges are not considered to be of particular architectural interest.
