Description
No. 31 High Street is a house and shop built in the early 19th century, with a later 19th-century extension on the left. The building is constructed of red brick, with the earlier section featuring Flemish bond, and has a pantile roof. It stands two storeys high and has three first-floor windows. The shop front includes a central entrance, with angles defined by pilasters that support a fascia, cornice, and blind-box. There are a pair of part-glazed panelled doors, a blocked entrance, and a 16-pane sash window to the left, which has a segmental brick arch and cill. The first floor features three similar windows. Above the door is a plaque from the Sun Insurance Company, and there is a beaded cornice board. The building has an end stack on the right and an axial stack to the left. The left side of the building has a later ground-floor canted bay window under a hipped slate roof, and the first floor has a tripartite sash window with glazing bars. This section is topped with a pedimented stone-coped gable that features a cogged brick raking cornice, with the cornice board and cast-iron gutter forming the base of the pediment. The ranges at the rear are of no special interest. This building is included for its group value.
