Description
No. 18 High Street is a shop and house dating from the mid to late 18th century. The front is made of red and blue brick arranged in contrasting Flemish bond, while the gable ends and rear are constructed from coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings. The roof is covered with concrete tiles and features a brick chimney stack. The building has two storeys and three windows on the first floor.
The entrance consists of a central part-glazed fielded-panel door set within a wooden architrave, which is topped by a hood supported by brackets. To the right of the door is a sash window in a flush wooden architrave, and to the left are two similar sash windows. There is a two-course stepped brick band at the first floor level. The first floor has two similar sash windows to the centre and right, and a tripartite sash window with glazing bars to the left. All windows feature segmental arches made of contrasting brick. The eaves are stepped in brick.
The building stands gable end to the street, with the left gable end displaying quoins, a part-glazed door beneath a rectangular overlight, and a round-headed attic sash window with glazing bars set under a brick arch, which is finished with a brick coped and tumbled detail. Inside, the small entrance hall contains an open-well staircase with a Chinese Chippendale balustrade and fielded panel doors with architraves.
