Description

The Town Hall, dated 1897, is located on the east side of Market Place in Kirton in Lindsey. It is constructed from squared limestone with limestone ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building is two storeys high, three bays wide, and five bays deep. It has a moulded ashlar plinth and raised quoins. The central entrance is round-arched and features a pair of panelled doors with a fanlight, all set within a chamfered ashlar surround that includes moulded imposts and a raised keystone. On either side of the entrance are round-arched casements with similar surrounds and bracketed cills. The first floor has three taller windows that are similar in style, with a cill band. Above, there is a pediment with a moulded raking cornice and a flat band at the base inscribed with 'DIAMOND JUBILEE TOWN HALL', along with a section of moulded cornice above the centre. The tympanum features an oculus with radial glazing bars and a keyed diamond-shaped surround that is inscribed with the date. The building has lateral stacks. The right return includes a central round-headed entrance and a first-floor window, both flanked by square-headed windows, all in ashlar surrounds. The materials used for the Town Hall were salvaged from the former prison built in 1789. This building is included for its group value.
