Description

The Registry Office, originally a Town Hall, was built in 1867 and has undergone minor alterations since. It features red brick with yellow and blue brick, as well as stone and tile dressings. The building has a shallow pitched hipped slate roof with remnants of side wall stacks. It is two storeys high and consists of five bays, with an advanced central bay that tapers from the impost level of the doorcase up to the base of the first floor.

On the ground floor, the central bay displays horizontal rustication up to the impost level of the doorcase and windows. The doorcase is roll moulded and semi-circular headed, featuring a yellow brick arch, a stone hoodmould, and continuous impost bands made of stone and glazed tiles. Below the plain overlight, there are double panelled doors. The yellow brick tumbling on either side of the arch corresponds with the tapering of the bay. To either side of the central bay, there are segment-headed plain sash windows with yellow brick arches.

The first floor has a band of yellow brick with blue brick edges, which is interrupted at the centre by a segmental headed panel made of similar materials, inscribed with the year '1867' in stone. Above this, five tall semi-circular headed fixed windows with projecting stone sills break the yellow brick band, accompanied by ceramic tile bands at the impost level and yellow brick arches with stone keyblocks. A narrow terracotta band runs above, topped by a cornice featuring raised yellow brick panels between paired gutter brackets. The building has a wide eaves gutter with a blocking course over the central bay. The side elevations are constructed in plain red brick and include semi-circular headed first floor windows.

Inside, there is a central corridor with offices on either side and a hall above.
