Description

No 8 Market Place is a detached house, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, but it includes some earlier features. The structure is made of red brick and has a tiled gable-end roof with coped parapets. It stands two storeys tall and has a three-room layout that runs east-west, with a single-storey extension added to the east in the late 20th century. The building features brick string courses at the first floor and eaves level, along with one axial stack and one end stack.

On the south elevation, the house has an asymmetrical arrangement of three windows, with signs of blocked windows and a blocked doorway. There is one first-floor window beneath a late 19th-century dormer that has shaped bargeboarding and brackets. To the left of the doorway is a two-light window, while to the right is a late 16th or early 17th-century two-light window with a deeply chamfered stone surround on the mullion, which still retains its window bars. The end elevation facing the street features a late 19th-century bay window and a two-light window above it.

At the rear (north), there are two windows on the ground floor and one on the first floor. All windows, except for the stone window, have late 20th-century small-pane casements. Inside, the house has chamfered ceiling beams. The building is adjacent to a coursed rubble sandstone wall with a plinth, which forms the east end of the house and is visible internally. This wall extends slightly to the south, where a return is exposed externally, possibly featuring a carved stone mullion window.
