Description
The Donavon Monument, located to the north of the cemetery chapel at Marlpool Cemetery, is a Grade II listed monument dating from around 1864 and restored in 1927. It is made of stone and stands approximately eight feet high with a square base. The monument features a stepped plain base and has a semi-circular headed niche on each side, which are flanked by clasping Ionic columns. These columns rest on a moulded plinth, with their bases slightly projecting. Above the niches is an elaborate entablature adorned with honeysuckle decoration on the frieze, topped with a fluted urn finial. The niche on the south side contains a polished granite plaque inscribed with 'In memory of Lardner Dionysisus Donavon who died August 22 1864. Aged thirty-five years. He went about doing good.' The north side's niche bears an inscription stating, 'This monument was erected by public subscription as a token of gratitude towards and of esteem for Dr Donavon and in recognition of his unwearying attention and kindness towards the suffering poor and of the faithful discharge of all his professional duties.'
