Description
A model farm with attached farmhouse, designed by the architect W E Nesfield and completed in 1861. The building was constructed for Alfred Miller-Mundy of Shipley Hall and has been subject to restoration from 1980 onwards.
The structures are arranged in an 'Old English' style and are grouped around three sides of a courtyard, with the farmhouse positioned at the south-east corner, a dairy attached to its east side, and farm buildings attached to the west.
The farmhouse is single-storied with attics and features a square tower at the north-east corner. It is built of red brick with sandstone and buff brick bandings, and blue brick copings to the plinths. The roofs are plain tiles with geometric designs in red and blue tiles, plus crested ridge tiles. The farmhouse roof incorporates stone coped gables with ridge finials, large brick side wall stacks, and a scrolled weathervane mounted on the tower, which has a decorated pyramidal roof topped with sandstone and brick banding.
The south elevation displays an advanced gabled bay with casements to a central bay window below and a 2-light casement window above, featuring a chamfered lintel and a pointed relieving arch filled with decorative brickwork. To the west lies a low range with two cambered-headed casements. The east elevation contains a narrow pointed window with decorative brickwork in the relieving arch to the south, and the tower to the north with an attached archway between leading through to the dairy. This archway has a segmental brick head with carved roundels on the stone impost blocks. The tower itself displays casement windows below a decorative upper storey with stone stringcourse and geometric designs in coloured brickwork.
The octagonal dairy to the east has brick banding to its base and large casement windows to the north and east. Below the eaves on the north-west, north-east, south-east and south-west are chamfered 2-light windows with cusped circular openings. The south elevation bears a stone plaque inscribed 'AMM'. The roof, currently untiled, is topped with a wooden dovecot featuring arcaded sides.
The interior formerly contained decorations by Albert Moore; it now has slate shelves and some painted decoration.
The farm buildings to the west of the house consist of a north range of pigsties with cowsheds to the west and an attached west range containing a stable to the north, a large carriage arch at the centre, and further stabling to the south, ending in a circular dovecot. The pigsties are single-storey with cambered brick arches leading into them and brick walls to the front with inset stone feeding troughs. The cowsheds to the west have five stable doors with cambered-headed windows to the sides; at the east end is another stone feeding trough. The western range features a segment-headed doorcase with a stable door to the north, a central flat archway on wooden brackets, and another flat-headed stable door to the south with wide double doors beyond.
Attached to the south-west corner of these stables is the dovecot, which has brick banding to its base with a sawtooth band at the top and stone and brick banding above. The lower stage has a cambered-headed narrow window with louvred openings above. The conical roof features gableted openings on projecting corbels to the north, south, west and east, and is topped by a sunburst finial.
The sandstone dressings to the house are now painted. All surfaces are in red brick with sandstone and buff brick bandings, and blue brick copings to the plinths.
A Coadestone fountain and ornamental wrought iron gates with bird motifs form part of the group and are being restored.
