Description

The Gardens is a house, now used as offices, built in 1882 for the Miller-Mundys of Shipley Hall. The building features red brick with stone dressings, quoins, and bands, along with a jettied timber frame on the first floor that includes diagonal brick nogging and plaster infill at the top of the gables. It has steeply pitched red clay tile roofs with wide overhanging eaves and bargeboarded gables. The brick ridge stacks are adorned with stone bands and cornices, as well as raised vertical brick bands. The structure is two storeys tall and consists of two bays by two bays, designed in the style of Nesfield and Norman Shaw.

On the south elevation, there are two gabled bays, with the western bay slightly advanced. The eastern bay features a central 3-light recessed and cavetto moulded mullion window with four-centred arched lights and incised spandrels. The western bay has a similar 5-light bow window. Above these, there are two 4-light timber mullion windows and jettied gables with cambered ties and decorative timberwork. The west gable displays a central plaster plaque featuring the crest of the Miller-Mundy family, dated 1882 and inscribed 'EMM'.

The west elevation includes an advanced gabled bay to the north with a 4-light mullion window, similar to those on the south elevation's ground floor. Attached to the south is a lower gabled porch, open to the ground floor, featuring a four-centred arch on octagonal piers with carved spandrels that support the upper room. Behind the porch, there is a doorcase with a four-centred arched head and a plank door with elaborate hinges. To the south of the porch is a small four-centred arched window, followed by a 2-light window, also with four-centred arched lights. The northern bay has a 4-light timber mullion window above, and the porch has a similar 2-light window. Above, the jettied gables are adorned with decorative timberwork. The interior includes panelled doors and a stick baluster staircase.
