Description

No 1 Church Street is a house with likely origins in the early 17th century, which was refronted in 1696 and converted into a pair of cottages in the mid 19th century. Renovations in 1979-80 included rebuilding the left gable end and converting it back into a single house. The building is constructed of red brick with some re-used limestone ashlar blocks on the right gable end, and it features a pantile roof.

The house has a two-room central-entrance plan with a continuous rear outshut and stands two storeys tall with three first-floor windows. It has a tall moulded brick plinth and a plain recessed board door located to the left of centre, which is beneath a segmental header arch. There was a former entrance to the right that has a 20th-century two-light sliding sash window below a similar arch. The ground floor also has three-light sliding sashes with horizontal glazing bars beneath segmental header arches, with the top of the plinth forming the window sills. A three-course brick band runs along the first floor, featuring a central cogged course.

On the first floor, there are two three-light sliding sashes and a small central casement above a recessed painted datestone with an ovolo-moulded brick surround. The house has end stacks, and the right return has a similar plinth, first-floor band, and a two-course band at the eaves level with a dentilled lower course. The left return has been rebuilt with similar details, and there are attic casements in the gables. The interior features details from the 19th and 20th centuries, and renovations have uncovered an original white-washed wall behind the current front, along with remains of original thatching.
