Description
Nos 1 and 3 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with later additions and shop fronts from the late 19th to early 20th century. The building is constructed of brick and rendered, topped with a pantile roof.
Originally, the layout was I-shaped, featuring a two-room central lobby entry and a single-room wing to the rear right. There is a later single-room addition at an angle on the street corner to the left, along with an extension to the inner angle and wings to the rear. The ground floor front is now a single room.
The shop front at the left angle includes a recessed glazed door flanked by two-light plate-glass windows in a wooden surround with columns and cusped heads, a plain frieze, carved consoles, and a hood. The original entrance to the right features a half-glazed panelled door within a 19th-century panelled surround that has a frieze and cornice. There is a single shop window to the right in a plain wooden surround.
On the first floor, there are plate-glass windows set in flush wooden architraves with sills and timber lintels. The building has a moulded wooden eaves cornice, which is somewhat damaged, and the roof is hipped to the right. There is a cross-plan axial stack. The interior contains spine beams on the ground floor that are supported by cast-iron columns, although this has not been fully investigated. The adjoining three-storey range to the left is not of special interest.
