Description

Nos 34 and 36 High Street is a house that has been converted into shops with living accommodation above. It was remodeled in the mid-18th century from an earlier house. The building is made of red brick with some areas of fine early pointing and stands at 3½ storeys tall, featuring a symmetrical five-window range. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front set into a circa 1900 surround, which includes panelled pilasters, a moulded cornice, and open ironwork brattishing. The first and second floors have 12-pane sash windows, with hornless sashes on the second floor, while the upper half storey has 6-pane sashes. All windows have sills and painted arches, and the central openings on each floor are blocked. The building has a parapet.

Inside, there is a staircase from around 1700 with turned newels and balusters that remains between the first and third floors. One room is completely panelled with two tiers of large panels featuring moulded stiles and muntins. There is also some panelling in the current hall and corridors. On the first floor, there are two fireplaces from around 1900 with tiled surrounds. Below ground level, there are remains of an early 14th-century vaulted undercroft; although the vault has collapsed, remnants of chamfered ribs can be seen, some embedded in later walling, and the shaft and capitals remain in place, featuring simple roll moulding on the capitals and bases with springers for a quadripartite vault.
