Description

30 High Street is a Grade II listed shop that was originally a pair of houses with shops, dating from the early 16th century, with alterations from the 17th century and later. The building is timber framed with plaster render and has a Kent clay tile roof. It features two short, identical jetties facing the street, which are connected at the back to a cross wing that spans the full width of the site. This cross wing appears to have been built as a single unit, as indicated by the wall plate of the jettied sections being securely morticed into the front wall plate of the cross wing. By the 17th century, the main living quarters were located in the cross wing.

The building has two storeys with an attic. The front exterior has a symmetrical arrangement of four windows, with two gables. There is a 20th-century shop front that retains 19th-century panelled pilasters. The first floor is jettied, with exposed joists, widely spaced studs, and an interrupted rail at window sill level. The windows are two-light casements with latticed leading, featuring ovolo-moulded surrounds and mullions, although only one window is original. The building has prominent bracketed guttering. The rear is weatherboarded and has three hornless sash windows.

Inside, much of the original framing is visible, including large downward braces on both external walls and internal partitions. A central closed partition runs from the street to the rear wall, moulded to the front ranges with cyma and cavetto profiles. The ceiling beams have scroll and hollow step stops, and the joists are largely intact. At the rear, there is a complete wooden panelled room from around 1600, featuring four tiers of stile and muntin panels divided by Ionic pilasters with strapwork and fluted shafts, along with a dentil cornice with consoles. The fireplace overmantel has two arched compartments, one displaying trompe l'oeil perspective, with strapwork pilaster divisions and flanked by paired terms on plinths. The roof is likely a side purlin construction.
