Description
No. 20 High Street is a former house that has been converted into a shop with accommodation above. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of brown brick with a Kent clay tile roof that is hipped towards the street. There is a right-hand lateral brick stack. The building stands at 3½ storeys tall and features a three-window range. A prominent cornice is located below the renewed blocking courses.
On the first floor, the principal room is highlighted by 15-pane hornless sash windows that are recessed under round-headed arches, which are divided by pilasters with panelled stucco capitals. There are delicate lattice-work iron railings on the balcony. The second floor and upper half-storey windows are situated under flat brick arches, with 12 and 6-pane hornless sashes respectively. Contemporary rainwater goods are positioned between Nos 18 and 20.
The ground floor retains four debased Ionic piers from the early shop front, while the rest features a mid-20th century plate glass window set in an opaque glazed surround. Some sash windows can be found at the rear of the building. The interior has not been inspected.
