Description

The Former National Westminster Bank is a bank building from the late 19th century, designed in the Free Renaissance style. It is constructed of finely pointed red brick with stone dressings made of white limestone and yellow sandstone. The building stands three storeys tall and features an almost symmetrical three-window arrangement. It has quoins and an open parapet adorned with bulbous balusters.

On the second floor, the windows are arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern, round-headed, and flanked by composite pilasters with panelled aprons. The pediments of these windows break into the parapet, with the central segmental pediment displaying the bank's initials and floral relief. The first floor windows are arranged in a 2:3:2 pattern, featuring heavy surrounds, with the central oriel window corbelled out on a large console bracket, all beneath a panelled cornice.

The ground floor includes three windows and a right-hand entrance, all with shouldered arches supported by Corinthian pilasters and a panelled plinth. There is a shaped stone stack on the left-hand side, while the right-hand stack has been rebuilt in brick. The extension of the bank to the right, known as No 38, is not included in this listing. The site was previously occupied by a Grade III building that has since been demolished.
