Description

No. 48 is an early 19th-century house and shop, with later alterations, situated on Rochester High Street. A lower range extends to the rear, and this may incorporate earlier fabric. The building is constructed of stock brick, with Kent tiled roofs.

The front range contains the principal rooms and is connected to a rear wing; a lower range beyond this may have always been semi-industrial in purpose. The front facade is three stories high with a later attic. It presents a symmetrical three-window arrangement. A parapet hides dormers from the street view, and the first-floor windows are recessed under round-headed arches with stucco capitals. Twelve-pane hornless sash windows are found on the upper floors. The ground floor has two original doors with fielded panels and rectangular overlights, and a 20th-century shop front is located in between. An internal end stack is visible on the left side.

The rear wing is three and a half stories high and features sash windows with glazing bars on each floor. It has an internal end stack and appears to have been heightened at some point. The low range beyond has no side windows; the scars of abutting buildings have since been removed. A 20th-century window and modern doorways are present on the end elevation.
