Description
46 High Street is a house with a shop that was not used as a dwelling at the time of the re-survey in 1988. It dates from the late 15th century and was substantially remodeled in the late 17th century, with later alterations. The building is timber framed and weatherboarded, featuring a Kent tile gable end roof and a brick ridge stack. It has a two-unit end-jetty plan with a later cross-wing at the rear. The front range is one and a half storeys high, set end-on to High Street, while the rear wing is two storeys.
The front façade is weatherboarded with a deep first-floor jetty and includes a three-light casement window on the first floor, along with a late 20th-century shop front. The rear also has sash windows and is weatherboarded. Inside, the ground floor features raised panelling and a moulded cornice from around 1760. There is a lateral dogleg stair with turned balusters, and part of the associated panelled dado remains. The first-floor rooms have more raised panelling, internal panelled shutters, and panelled cupboard doors with H and butterfly hinges. A planked attic door with spur hinges is also present. The front range has a crown post roof, with the principal members of the roof surviving only in the front bay, and the front gable wall has largely intact downward struts. This building is notable for retaining the scale of late medieval houses on the High Street and contains a good set of fittings from around 1700 and later.
