Description

No. 51 High Street is a house with a restaurant, primarily dating from the mid-17th century, with an early 18th-century facade. The building is constructed of grey brick with red brick dressings on the front and features a Kent tile roof with a dormer. It has a single-depth front range with a rear wing, and the framing of the entire structure is largely intact.

The front elevation has three storeys and a regular three-window arrangement. It is topped with a parapet that has stone coping and a simple brick cornice band. The windows have rubbed brick cambered arches with keystones and stone sills, and the upper floors feature later 19th-century four-pane plate-glass horned sashes. The ground floor is stuccoed, with a doorway on the left that has panelled reveals, plain pilasters, and a moulded canopy, leading to a panelled door with a rectangular overlight. There is also a large early 19th-century shop window beneath a moulded segmental arch, flanked by panelled pilasters. A lead rainwater head is located between Nos. 51 and 53.

Inside, there is a fragment of 17th-century decorative work, such as cornices, which likely continues to exist concealed within the structure. A 17th-century four-light window with large chamfered mullions is exposed in the side wall of the rear wing on the first floor and contains some 19th-century coloured glass.
