Description

Chertsey's Gate, also known as College Gate and Cemetery Gate, is a Grade I listed gateway that provides access to the Cathedral outer precinct and lay cemetery from High Street. It likely dates from the mid-14th century, around 1334 when the precinct wall was constructed. The lower part of the gate is built from rubble ragstone with flint banding on the front and rear, while the upper section is timber-framed and features renewed weatherboarding. The structure has two storeys and an attic, topped with a Kent tiled gable-end roof.

At both the front and rear, there is a wide four-centred moulded arch with a hoodmould, which has been cut back in its moulding to facilitate vehicular access. Access to the upper rooms is provided by a polygonal stair turret located on the southwest side. There are blocked low arches on both side walls, and the ceiling over the passage features an unchamfered beam. The front elevation has jetties on the first and attic floors, with two 12-pane unhorned sash windows on the first floor and a two-light casement window in the gable wall. The rear elevation has a jetty only on the first floor, featuring a 16-pane hornless sash window and a two-light casement window above it. Additionally, there is a tiny casement window on the Boley Hill elevation. The interior of the upper floors has not been inspected.
