Description

This is a mid-19th century building comprising two shops with living accommodation above, located on High Street, Rochester. The building is constructed of red brick with fine pointing, stone dressings, and has a Kent tile roof running parallel to the street, featuring two gabled dormers and brick stacks. The front elevation is three storeys high and has a regular five-window range. Notable features include a prominent moulded cornice and stucco quoining. The upper floor windows are plate glass 4-pane horned sashes, set in heavy stone (or stucco) moulded surrounds; the second-floor windows are lugged with keystones, and the sills have brackets. The early 20th century shopfronts have large fascias, console brackets, and plate glass windows, with the shopfront for numbers 59-61 returning along Northgate. The Northgate elevation is relatively plain, with horned sash windows. One of two rear wings fronts onto Northgate.
