Description
The gateway and gates at the Cemetery of St Mary Magdalene and Bishop's Hull were built around 1860, following the cemetery's opening in 1854. The gateway is constructed of random rubble with ashlar dressings. It features a tail pointed arch with a segmental rear arch above, and is flanked by buttresses with setoffs on both sides. Above, there is a crenellated parapet adorned with quatrefoils in the spandrels and topped with a weathervane. The main archway is fitted with attractive cast iron double gates that showcase Gothic traceried motifs, including crockets, quatrefoils, and mouchettes, along with a wheel tracery motif in the cresting. To the right, there is a side gate that shares similar design details. The entrance is further enhanced by polygonal bastions on either side. The listing includes the gates as a significant feature.
