Description
The gateway at the entrance to Manchester Southern Cemetery, built around 1879, features a set of six gatepiers and gates in a Gothic style. The gatepiers are made of sandstone ashlar and are complemented by wrought-iron gates. The inner pair of gatepiers is taller than the two outer pairs, and all have chamfered bases, broach stops at the recessed corners, and traceried gablets on all faces. Each pier is topped with short octagonal spirelets that have cusped panels. The central double gates and the single pedestrian gates are adorned with wrought-iron open-work, including trefoil tracery and quatrefoil panels. This gateway forms a group with the associated Registrar's Office to the west and the lodge to the east.
