Description

The Registrar's Office at Manchester Southern Cemetery, built in 1879, serves as the office for the cemetery. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs topped with red cockscomb ridge tiles. The building has an irregular plan that includes a rectangular main block, a set-back east wing, and a tower at the angle. Designed in the Gothic style, it stands two storeys high with a single-storey wing and a three-stage tower. The main block features two gabled dormers and a gabled wing to the right. The tower, which projects from the right-hand return wall, includes a two-centred arched doorway and a low buttress at the ground floor, a single-light window on the first floor, and a set-back octagonal top stage that displays clock faces on the cardinal sides and arched lancets on the other sides, topped with a short slated spire. The single-storey east wing at the rear contains an office and has a canted bay window on the gable end. This building forms a group with the entrance gateway and lodge located to the east.
