Description

The Church of England Chapel in Manchester Southern Cemetery is a cemetery chapel built in 1879. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and features slate roofs with red cockscomb ridge tiles, designed in a Gothic style. The chapel has a nave oriented on a north-south axis, with a north chancel, a low west aisle, coupled east transepts, a south-west tower that incorporates a porch, and a north-west vestry.

The short nave is supported by angle buttresses and has a 2-centred arched window in the south gable wall. The low west aisle contains five small octagonal windows and an ashlar parapet, along with a dormer window in the roof of the nave above it. The square tower consists of two unequal stages, featuring set-back buttresses up to the belfry level and corner pilasters. It is topped with a pyramidal spire that has a tall finial and a weathervane. The entrance includes a 2-centred arched doorway with a moulded surround, a hoodmould, a gablet, and cast-iron gates, while each side of the belfry has a tall louvred lancet.

The low gabled vestry is supported by angle buttresses and has a 2-centred arched doorway in its gable wall. Although the interior has not been inspected, this chapel, along with a Nonconformist chapel and a Roman Catholic chapel, forms part of an intact set of three cemetery chapels that vary in form but share a matching style.
