Description

The entrance lodges, piers, screen, and gates of Withington Hospital are a pair of lodges built in 1854 by Hayley, Son and Hall. They are constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and feature hipped slate roofs, along with cast-iron screens, gate piers, and gates. Each lodge has a tripartite plan, consisting of a tall rectangular central section flanked by lower square wings, designed in an Italianate style. The central section is three stories high and one bay wide, while the wings are two stories high and one bay wide, creating a symmetrical appearance with a projecting center.

Architectural details include a stone plinth, rusticated quoins, a sill-band at the first floor, prominent bracketed eaves, and parapets on the wings, each with a pierced arched upstand. The ground floor features tripartite windows with corniced stone architraves, while the first floor has a large round-headed window in the center, adorned with a shell tympanum and a broad extrados band with a keystone and stylised voussoirs, alongside Venetian windows in each wing with keyed architraves. The return sides and rear of the lodges are similar, with round-headed windows and doorways at the ground floor.

The west lodge includes a two-storey extension to the left, which has a double projection in the center and a Venetian window with a blocked tympanum. The linking screens are made of cast-iron open-work piers and bar railings with mid and top bands, featuring three pairs of cast-iron gates. This structure forms a group with the principal administrative block of Withington Hospital.
