Description
The building is a synagogue constructed between 1925 and 1926, designed by Delissa Joseph under the supervision of Joseph Sunlight. It is made of red brick with some Portland stone dressings, and the roof is concealed. The synagogue has a rectangular plan with projecting wings and a porch. It is symmetrical and two storeys high, featuring a central porch made of white stone, which includes pilasters, a cornice, and a parapet, along with a recessed doorway that has a geometrical overlight. This porch is flanked by large rectangular two-storey wings, which function as stair turrets. Each wing has a raised centre panel with a white stone doorway at ground level, a round-headed window with radiating glazing bars and margin panes on the first floor, and a brick cornice and parapet with upstands. Similar windows are found on the return sides of the wings.
A lower two-storey narthex connects these three elements to the main vessel, which features pilastered three-bay side walls with three windows on each floor of each bay. The upper floor windows are arranged in a Venetian style. The interior, as inspected in 1988, includes a narthex with an entrance vestibule flanked by cloakrooms and stairs. The impressive main vessel is supported by Ionic columns that rise through galleries and support an entablature, which forms an arch over the Ark. The Ark has polished white marble steps and a parapet, and the tebah (or reading desk) is made of the same material. The furnishings are made of Austrian oak. This synagogue is a fine example of its period.
