Description
No. 139 Barlow Moor Road is a large detached house, now serving as British Council offices, dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with a red tile roof and features a square plan with a large porch and staircase on the north side, designed in the Queen Anne style. The building has two storeys over cellars, characterized by a string course, deeply coved plastered eaves, and steeply pitched roofs.
The entrance front is highlighted by a prominent stair-turret at the center, which includes a full-width balcony supported by large stone brackets and adorned with wrought-iron railings. Beneath the balcony is a doorway, and a very large canted oriel window rises from the balcony to the eaves, featuring wooden transoms and mullions, including a semicircular light in the center, along with a parapet that has a central pediment. The hipped roof above has a shaped brick upstand with a terracotta panel. The side ranges of the building have only one narrow window at ground floor level.
On the east front, there is a round-headed archway in the center and a small first-floor oriel window to the right, styled similarly to the front oriel, including an upstand above. The south front features a two-storey canted bay to the right, with cross-windows, a parapet, and a large shaped gable in the roof behind. The building is topped with very tall chimneys. The interior has not been inspected.
