Description

The Nazarene Theological College is a former private house that has been converted into a theological college. It was built in 1914 by the architectural firm Mark and Dunkerley. The building is constructed of pink brick, featuring some timber framing and plaster infill, and has a graduated stone slate roof. It is designed in the Vernacular Revival style and has an H-plan layout, with a long service wing attached to the front of the left wing.

The main block is two stories tall with attics and features a nearly symmetrical facade with a 1:3:1 window arrangement. It has projecting gabled crosswings and a central two-story gabled timber-framed porch that is open at the ground floor, with the upper floor slightly jettied. Below the bressummer, there is a transomed 10-light oriel window. The windows throughout the building are wooden mullioned casement windows with 1, 2, and 3 lights on both floors, and there are two small 3-light flat-roofed dormers in the roof.

The left wing includes transomed 6- and 10-light windows and has an outshut on its outer side, with a single-storey range attached to the front. The right-hand wing features a single-storey projection with splayed corners and a 6-light transomed window above. The building is adorned with various tall chimneys.

The attached projecting service wing is T-shaped, with a low single-storey range that terminates in a taller gabled end wing, which has a wooden bellcote on the roof. At the rear, there is a recessed center with a canted two-storey bay under a hipped roof, with the upper floor open as a balcony. This bay is situated between coupled-gable wings, where the inner gables are slightly smaller and were originally porches, now enclosed and glazed with round-headed arches at the ground floor. The outer gables feature semicircular bay windows, with the one on the right now having a brick parapet, and there are transomed windows throughout.

Inside, the college boasts good plasterwork, some segmental barrel vaulted ceilings, and an open-well staircase with turned balusters.
