Description
The Rhodes Memorial Clock Tower is a memorial clock tower and drinking fountain located on Wilmslow Road in Didsbury, Manchester. It was built around 1910 to commemorate Dr. J. Milson Rhodes, who passed away in 1909. The tower is made of Portland stone and features a bronze plaque. It has a square section and is designed in the Edwardian baroque style, standing approximately 8 meters high and mounted on two steps, with the upper step having concave corners.
The north and south sides of the base include coved niches with projected drinking fountain bowls, while the other sides have blind doorways with moulded architraves. The tower itself has moulded corners and a bronze plaque on the east side, which includes an oval medallion with a profile in relief and the inscription "In memory of Dr. J. Milson Rhodes JP.CA. 1847-1909. A Friend to Humanity." The top of the tower features clock faces set in circular wreaths, a cornice that is segmentally arched over them, and a domed roof with a finial.
The clock tower is situated at the edge of the forecourt of the former railway station and forms a group with the War Memorial and Didsbury Public Library, which are located on the opposite side of the road.
