Description
The Church of England Girls' School is a school building dated 1910, as indicated on the rainwater heads. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone ashlar dressings and features red tiled roofs. The building has an irregular plan that includes a hall with a lower entrance range to the right, a lower range to the left, a tower at the rear right-hand corner of the hall, and a classroom block behind this. Designed in the Arts and Crafts style, the structure is one and two storeys high.
The entrance range features a round-headed arch with a stone surround and a parapet inscribed with "CHURCH OF ENGLAND GIRLS' SCHOOL." This is flanked by mullioned windows with four and three lights, and there is a cross-window under a gablet to the right. The hall boasts three very large 12-light mullion and transom windows that break the eaves, complete with moulded cornices and flat roofs. The tower has pairs of stone strips that rise to small two-light windows under gablets, topped with a neo-Baroque domed cupola. The low range to the left includes a stone canted bay window that breaks through the eaves, while the classroom block features cross-windows. The interior has not been inspected.
