Description
Broome House is a house that has been converted into a children's home. It dates from the early to mid 18th century and was significantly enlarged in the 19th century, with alterations made over time. The exterior features pink-washed roughcast render on brick and slate roofs. The building has an irregular plan with three sections, including the original entrance block at the west end, which is double-depth and has a large semicircular bow at the front, canted wings on the sides, and an outshut that connects to later additions at the back.
The house is two-and-a-half storeys tall and has a symmetrical five-window facade, with the central two-storey bow being the focal point. This bow is accessed by a flight of three semi-circular steps leading to a doorway framed by an open-pedimented Ionic doorcase with decorated capitals, a panelled door, and a fanlight featuring radiating metal tracery. The windows are segmental-headed 12-pane sashes with exposed boxes, and there is a dentilled cornice above. The main range on either side of the bow has a first-floor band (interrupted by the bow) and similar sashed windows with keystones, along with a 19th-century roof that has projected verges at the gables. The canted two-storey wings feature sashed windows without glazing bars and also have dentilled cornices. There are additional structures at the rear.
Inside, the front range includes a hallway with a modillion cornice and an inner doorway with a large fanlight. The central portion of the house contains what was once a billiard room, while the rear block features a former ballroom with a small proscenium stage.
