Description
Philip Godlee Lodge is a house that was being used as a nursing home at the time of listing and was converted into apartments in 2000. It dates from the early to mid-19th century and has been altered. The building features roughcast render on brick with sandstone dressings painted white and slate roofs. The main block is square and double-depth, facing east, with an L-shaped wing on the south side.
The house is two storeys tall, with the main block displaying a symmetrical three-window facade. It has prominent corner pilasters, a deep plain frieze, and a notable projected eaves. There is a central Ionic porch accessed by two steps, which protects a glazed and panelled door along with side windows, all beneath a large overlight with intricate geometrical glazing bars. The windows are sashed without glazing bars and have reeded architraves. The hipped roof features two tall ridge chimneys.
The slightly lower wing to the left has similar corner pilasters and features one window on the ground floor and three above, with the ground floor window altered. The north side includes a two-storey pilastered bay and 20th-century additions. At the rear, the ground floor of the main block boasts a fine wrought-iron verandah with delicately latticed standards and a frieze that incorporates anthemions. There are glazed doors in the center and a segmental bay window to the right, with the rear otherwise resembling the front.
Inside, the entrance hall features an Ionic screen that is distyle in antis, and there is an open-well staircase with cast-iron balusters.
