Description

A pair of houses, or possibly a farmhouse and cottage, dating to the later 18th century and the mid-19th century, with alterations. The building is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings, and has a slate roof. The plan is of a double-depth rectangular form, comprising three sections: a later 18th-century double-fronted house on the right (number 18), an early one-bay addition to its left, and a 19th-century double-fronted house (number 20) added to that. The two storeys have a window arrangement of 2:1:2 at the first floor level. The original house, which was originally symmetrical with a central doorway (now indicated by patched brickwork), has two three-light casement windows on each floor. The ground-floor windows are segmental-headed, with multi-paned glass and raised stone sills. The first-floor windows are shorter, with raised stone sills. To the left of the original house, beyond the remains of a vertical joint, are one square and one segmental-headed window at ground floor, and a two-light casement window above. This section has a double chimney stack at the junction with the original house, and a cut-down gable chimney. Number 20 has a central doorway with an open-work wooden gabled porch, two four-pane sash windows on each floor. These windows also have raised sills and wedge lintels, a chimney at the junction to the right, and a cut-down gable chimney. The rear and interior were not inspected.
