Description
The Old Chapel Building at Didsbury Campus, part of Manchester Metropolitan University, is a Grade II listed structure likely associated with the Wesleyan Theological Institution. Built in the mid-19th century, it has been altered over time and was used as a students' union building at the time of listing.
The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond on a sandstone plinth, featuring sandstone dressings and steeply-pitched slate roofs. Its E-plan layout consists of a hall oriented on an east-west axis, with domestic wings extending to the north and south. A 20th-century single-storey addition fills the re-entrants at the rear.
In the Gothick style, the building has two storeys at different levels. The symmetrical west front showcases the wide gable-end of the hall, flanked by set-back one-bay links to the gable ends of the wings. The gable of the hall features octagonal corner turrets, two stone canted bay windows at ground level (likely added later), and a tall stepped triple lancet window at the center of the upper floor, flanked by single-light lancets and topped with a small trefoil. The pitched stone coping has a central flat.
The linking bays, which are lower, include first-floor sill-bands and cross-windows with margin panes. The lower windows are taller, featuring arched lights and hoodmoulds. The gables of the wings, which project slightly forward, have similar windows and blind lancets at attic level, although the gables are now false due to the roofs being rebuilt at a lower level.
The return sides of both wings are designed in a similar style, with a symmetrical three-bay main element that has a gabled center projecting forward. This center contains a Tudor-arched doorway with a Gothick panelled door and a Gothick traceried fanlight, along with a two-bay continuation to the rear. Some windows feature sashed four-pane glazing or no glazing bars. Inside, there is some Gothick fan-vaulting in the hall.
