Description

11 and 13 The Grove are a pair of houses, likely built around 1870. They are constructed from brown and red brick, featuring some applied half-timbering, and have a slate roof. The houses have a double-fronted design and are in the North German vernacular style. They are two storeys high with four windows, showcasing ornamental geometrical half-timbering in the gable, along with projecting verges that have bargeboards and an apex finial. The doorways include panelled and glazed doors with rectangular stone lintels above. The windows are arranged in 2- and 3-light configurations, also with raised sills and rectangular stone lintels. The rear and interior of the houses have not been inspected. These houses are part of a small but distinctive settlement, believed to have been built for an immigrant North German community, and they represent a rare example of domestic architecture that reflects the cosmopolitan nature of 19th century Manchester society. They form a group with other buildings in The Grove, including Nos. 803-805 and No. 807 Wilmslow Road.
