Description

807 and 809 Wilmslow Road are a pair of houses, likely built around 1870. They are primarily constructed of brown brick in header bond, with some red brick, sandstone dressings, and applied "half-timbering," topped with slate roofs. The buildings have an irregular plan featuring a tower on the left and a projecting wing on the right, which is probably an early 20th-century addition. They are designed in a North German vernacular style and stand two storeys tall, except for the three-storey tower.

The façade has a window arrangement of 2:3:3, with some red brick bands. The central area includes a doorway to the left with a trefoil stone head, a large three-light casement window to the right, and three first-floor windows (one, two, and one lights) each set under a gablet that projects from the roof, with the central window being larger. The left tower features a canted bay window at the ground floor, two single-light windows at the first floor, and another single-light window at the second floor beneath a steeply-pitched half-dormer roof, with corbelled corners and a tall steeply-pitched hipped roof. The right wing includes a recessed canted bay window at the ground floor, with the upper floor supported by stone columns on either side, a stone balcony with cast-iron railings to the left first-floor window, and ornamental half-timbering in the gable.

These houses are part of a small but distinctive settlement known as The Grove, which is said to have been built for an immigrant North German community. They are a rare example of domestic architecture that reflects the cosmopolitan nature of 19th-century Manchester society and form a group with other items in The Grove and Nos 803-5 Wilmslow Road.
