Description

This building is a house located on Wilmslow Road in Didsbury, Manchester, likely built around 1870 and altered since then. It features brown brick in header bond, with some red brick and sandstone dressings, along with some applied "half-timbering" details, and has a slate roof. The house is designed in a North German vernacular style and has a rectangular plan.

It stands two storeys high with a gabled facade that has five windows, although the center window is blind. The corners of the building are buttressed, and there are bands of red brick between the openings. The gable displays ornamental half-timbering, although the lower two bands are now missing, leaving the pattern visible in the remaining paintwork. The projecting verges have bargeboards and an apex finial.

The doorway is located slightly to the right of center and features a recessed panelled and glazed door with a rectangular stone lintel above. On the ground floor, there are two large three-light windows, while the first floor has four two-light windows, with the outer two being shorter. All windows have raised sills and rectangular stone lintels, with red brick relieving arches over the first, third, and fifth windows on the first floor. The house also has tall side-wall chimneys.

The rear and interior of the building were not inspected. This house is part of a small but distinctive settlement, believed to have been built for an immigrant North German community. It is a rare example of domestic architecture that reflects the cosmopolitan nature of 19th-century Manchester society and forms a group with other buildings in The Grove, including Nos 803-5 and No. 807 Wilmslow Road.
