Description

This listing describes a pair of houses located on Wilmslow Road in Didsbury, Manchester, likely built around 1870. They are constructed from brown and red brick, featuring some applied half-timbering, and have a slate roof. The houses have a double-fronted design and are in the North German vernacular style. They are two storeys tall with four windows, showcasing ornamental geometrical half-timbering in the gable, along with projecting verges that have bargeboards and an apex finial. The doorways are fitted with panelled and glazed doors, topped with rectangular stone lintels. The windows are arranged in 2- and 3-light configurations, each with raised sills and rectangular stone lintels. The rear and interior of the houses have not been inspected. This pair is part of a small but distinctive settlement, believed to have been built for the immigrant North German community, and is a rare example of domestic architecture that reflects the cosmopolitan nature of 19th century Manchester society. They form a group with other buildings in The Grove, including Nos. 803-5 and No. 807 Wilmslow Road.
